Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the largest single-site Hospital in North Wales with over 700 beds. It provides a wide range of clinical services including Accident and Emergency, planned and emergency medical and surgical treatment, maternity services and mental health care.

Surgical specialities include trauma and orthopaedics, urology, vascular surgery, ENT, ophthalmology and gynaecology whilst rheumatology, dermatology, cardiology and medicine for the elderly are amongst the comprehensive range of medical specialities provided. The new Wrexham Child Health Centre brings together a number of paediatric services covering child health, development and protection.

The Hospital is an academic unit of the University Hospital of Wales College of Medicine for renal services and is involved in a range of research activities at the adjacent Wrexham Medical Institute and Centre for Health Studies. Alongside the Hospital the University College of Wales, Bangor also runs Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Radiography.

The activities of the Hospital are complemented by the development, in the adjoining Wrexham Technology Park, of a number of highly specialised medical and pharmaceutical companies.

Wrexham also has a private hospital - the BUPA Yale hospital, situated close to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Wrexham County Borough Council works in partnership with other health organisations to promote better health in the community. The Council has also co-ordinated the planning of projects with health professionals and the voluntary sector to develop initiatives unique to Wrexham. The Council has special units based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, including the Child Health & Disability Team and the Adult Hospital Social Work Service.

The Local Authority is committed to delivering efficient and effective services, which meet the needs of the community in terms of quality and affordability. Working with the Community and its partners, the Council is constantly trying to meet the increasing demands and expectations of its citizens and customers.

Nightingale House is Wrexham’s Hospice and Cancer Support Centre. It provides a purpose built Hospice, offering in-patient, out-patient and day care facilities as well as counselling and support for patients and their families.

All patient care is free of charge. The Hospice provides a 16 bed in-patient area, daycare facilities for up to 15 patients daily, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, an out-patient and lymphoedema clinic, together with various counselling, spiritual and educational support provided by highly trained and dedicated staff.

The majority of running costs for Nightingale House are met from voluntary donations and local fundraising, demonstrating the incredible generosity and kindness of local people.
