Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the largest single-site
Hospital in North Wales with over 700 beds. It provides a wide range of
clinical services including Accident and Emergency, planned and emergency
medical and surgical treatment, maternity services and mental health care.
Surgical specialities include trauma and orthopaedics, urology, vascular
surgery, ENT, ophthalmology and gynaecology whilst rheumatology, dermatology,
cardiology and medicine for the elderly are amongst the comprehensive
range of medical specialities provided. The new Wrexham Child Health Centre
brings together a number of paediatric services covering child health,
development and protection.
The Hospital is an academic unit of the University Hospital of Wales
College of Medicine for renal services and is involved in a range of research
activities at the adjacent Wrexham Medical Institute and Centre for Health
Studies. Alongside the Hospital the University College of Wales, Bangor
also runs Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Radiography.
The activities of the Hospital are complemented by the development, in
the adjoining Wrexham Technology Park, of a number of highly specialised
medical and pharmaceutical companies.
Wrexham also has a private hospital - the BUPA Yale hospital, situated
close to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Wrexham County Borough Council works in partnership with other health
organisations to promote better health in the community. The Council has
also co-ordinated the planning of projects with health professionals and
the voluntary sector to develop initiatives unique to Wrexham. The Council
has special units based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, including the
Child Health & Disability Team and the Adult Hospital Social Work
Service.
The Local Authority is committed to delivering efficient and effective
services, which meet the needs of the community in terms of quality and
affordability. Working with the Community and its partners, the Council
is constantly trying to meet the increasing demands and expectations of
its citizens and customers.
Nightingale House is Wrexhams Hospice and Cancer Support Centre.
It provides a purpose built Hospice, offering in-patient, out-patient
and day care facilities as well as counselling and support for patients
and their families.
All patient care is free of charge. The Hospice provides a 16 bed in-patient
area, daycare facilities for up to 15 patients daily, physiotherapy and
hydrotherapy, an out-patient and lymphoedema clinic, together with various
counselling, spiritual and educational support provided by highly trained
and dedicated staff.
The majority of running costs for Nightingale House are met from voluntary
donations and local fundraising, demonstrating the incredible generosity
and kindness of local people.
