At Your Leisure

In Wrexham it's easy to choose a healthy lifestyle and take part in regular activity. There are a range of modern facilities throughout the County Borough including eight Leisure Centres, an international athletics stadium, numerous golf courses, over 100 sports pitches, the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre together with health and fitness suites.

Waterworld, with its distinctive award winning saddle shaped roof, is situated in the town centre. The leisure centre incorporates a six-lane swimming pool, a learner pool, a raft ride, a lazy river leisure pool and spa within its swimming complex. This exciting leisure facility also has a fully equipped fitness suite and a health suite with a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.

Discover the Tropical Lagoon at Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, perfect for all the family. The Lagoon includes slides (60m Whirlslide and Children’ Serpent Slide) and a wave machine to add to the fun. Children can also enjoy The Tropical Playground soft play area.

Various courses in a variety of sports are organised throughout the year, as well as special sports events and competitions. For example, Wrexham Triathlon, the Lawn Tennis Association Satellite competition at the Tennis Centre, major athletics events and regional and national competitions in table tennis, badminton, fencing and karate.

Wrexham Football Club Stadium hosts international Rugby Union, Rugby League and football matches. World Cup Matches in all three sports have taken place at the ground.

The County Borough is home to the excellent Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. This friendly racecourse is one of only two in Wales and is located in the stunning setting of the Dee flood plain. The River Dee is one of the best salmon rivers in Wales.

Sailing takes place at The Flash and for the very energetic, there are a number of windsurfing, gliding and hang-gliding clubs in the area.

Six Country Parks offer access to outstanding countryside. Visitors can enjoy a walk in beautiful woodlands, wander along the rivers Clywedog and Dee or visit the spectacular Cefn Viaduct and Pontcysyllt Aqueduct.

Nant Mill Picnic AreaEach Country Park is unique: Alyn Waters Country Park has a visitor centre, large play area and excellent cycle network. Ty Mawr Country Park has a collection of farm animals and magnificent views of the Vale of Llangollen; Nant Mill Visitor Centre nestles in a steep wooded valley and provides excellent picnic facilities and woodland walks along the banks of the river Clywedog.

Minera Lead Mines and Country Park is the gateway to the eight-mile Clywedog Trail and allows access to some excellent walking country. Stryt Las Park and Bonc yr Hafod Country Park are home to the Great Crested Newt.

Bonc yr Hafod Country Park has some superb views of Wrexham and the spectacular Ruabon Mountains, if you walk to the top of the hill. Whether you enjoy woods, meadows, rivers or lakes, Wrexham’s Country Parks have them all.

For the adventurous, Wrexham offers paintball war games, 4-wheel driving in the rugged country, canoeing, horse riding and much more.

One of the UK’s most famous and spectacular National Parks, Snowdonia is just an hour’s drive from Wrexham. Snowdonia itself offers endless possibilities for outdoor leisure activities and, taken together with Mid Wales and the adjoining areas of North West England, the area must cater for almost every possible outdoor pursuit.

Wrexham has a regular Arts Festival, it hosts the Rally of Wales and is also home to the Wrexham Science Festival.

Wrexham’s Libraries provide a vibrant environment for informal study and recreational reading. The central library in Wrexham provides a wide range of lending materials for all ages and assisted access to information sources. There is also a network of community libraries and a mobile library service serving smaller villages and rural locations. The homelink service is available to people who are housebound.

Lifelong learning centres are being established at all libraries providing free Internet access through the People’s Network and the opportunity to use computers for study and leisure. A range of study materials and CD-Roms for both loan and reference use are available.

There are targeted information services at Wrexham Library including a value-added Businessline business information service, the Centre for Democratic Information which provides European, Parliamentary and National Assembly publications and the Children’s Information Bureau providing information for parents and carers.
