World, Europe UK & Wales

So you are thinking of travelling? Fancy going abroad or visiting another town? Here are a few topics you may have questions about.

The world we live in is forever changing, visiting other countries and seeing the different ways in which people live, the food they eat and the different scenery can be life changing for some people, visiting other parts of Wales can be a great experience too.

When you are thinking of travelling it is important to research the area you are going to, your transport there and back and possibly the language and currency used if you are going abroad.

The options for travel and exploration are beyond what anyone could have imagined just a few decades ago. Take a day trip to Cardiff, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Rome, Barcelona and dozens of other destinations. Or maybe a long weekend in New York – or learn to ski in Bulgaria – or take a year out to explore India and beyond – work your way around the world or volunteer to help communities in Latin America or Thailand.

Planning your trip is half the fun and here you will find the information you need to start your journey of discovery.

Transport

Getting around Wales, the UK or abroad can be a mine field with all the different types of public transport available. Some areas in which we live may not have some of the transport available so we have to plan our journeys around what transport is available to us.

It is important to let people know where you are going, what time you will be arriving so people know when to expect you and also to make sure you have credit on your mobile to let people know if you are delayed.

If you are looking for bus times from Wrexham please visit Wrexham Council website or Traveline Cymru.

You can also travel by train in the UK and even over to France on the Eurostar if you’re feeling adventurous. Travelling by train can be a relaxing, no map reading and enjoying something to eat whilst looking out of the window.

To find train times locally and across the UK visit the National Rail website or if you fancy going further a field to France please visit Rail Europe.

Taxis are a popular way to get around the town whether you are off to a mates house or coming home from a party. There are a lot of Taxi companies in Wrexham so before getting into a taxi make sure the vehicle is properly licensed by checking it has front and rear plates and ask to see the driver's identification badge. These simple checks will help you travel safely.

Taxis can be booked over the phone or by visiting the taxi office and to save any confusion on price always ask how much the fare is when you book.

Travelling Abroad

Going abroad for some people is a fantastic opportunity, whether it is a mate’s holiday, a gap year or a relaxing holiday for you and your partner. So before you go research the place you are going to and find out what the currency and language are and with the internet you can even Google most hotels and see where you are staying and read what other people thought.

There maybe unexpected taxes or payments when you arrive at the country so make sure you ask when you book. If there is anything you are not sure about pop in and see the travel agent you booked your holiday with.

More importantly enjoy your holiday.

Money

Different countries have different currencies, Europe has the Euro, Cuba has the Cuban Peso and America has the dollar. To find out what currency is used in the country you are visiting please check the currency selector.

There are several ways you can take money abroad:

Religions & Culture

All over the world people live differently and believe in different religions. This difference can be what attracts us to that country and the reason we book to go on holiday there.

For example Saudi Arabia does not allow the mixing of opposite sexes in public. Girls should dress modestly and must cover their hands, legs and also cover their heads with a scarf. In some countries alcohol is not allowed and a few still use the death penalty.

So, when you visit another country research the area you are going to and be mindful that other countries may have different beliefs and customs to your own.

Passports & Visas

Before booking your holiday check your passport is in date, if you don’t have a passport or it is running out it can take time to get a new one. There is a cost for the passports so please check them.

If you need to apply for a passport you can get the forms from the post office or apply online for adults.

You will need visas to travel to certain countries. Check before travelling. A travel agent, tour operator, national tourist board or embassy can advise on the visa requirements of a particular country.

Allow plenty of time for the visa to arrive as sometimes the application is dealt with in the country being visited.

To get a visa, you will usually have to complete a form and send off your passport. You may also have to send passport photographs, air tickets, and evidence that you can support yourself while abroad. A fee may be charged for the visa.
