Garden Project Wrexham

We all decided to tidy up the garden area at the rear of the building at Nacro in Wrexham
On Wednesday 12th May seven of us began to dig an area out to plant with a variety of vegetables, which we think will be good to cook with when they have grown. The old pond which was in the garden was filled up with the rubbish, then topped up with compost and planted in.
All the plants were donated from a variety of people and the compost was given to us by Ty Mawr Country Park which we were very grateful for.
Potatoes were also planted in containers; the old tyres which are in the garden will be used for mint and other vegetables.
As you can see from the difference in the photos all the plants have grown well and with everyone looking after them we will soon be able to make some healthy meals with the vegetables.

Thank You Barbeque
On Friday 21st May all the staff at the Wrexham Nacro office decided to have a barbeque for all the young people who had been involved in the cleaning up of the garden area to the rear of the building.
They made us burgers and hot dogs which were really tasty; we also had plenty of pop which was great as it was a hot day.
There were eight young people who attended and we all had a great time and would like to thank the staff for all there hard work.

Appetite for Life (A4L)
What is A4L?
You’ve heard of what Jamie Oliver has been trying to do in improving school meals in England, well it’s only fair that young people in Wales are not left out!
Appetite for Life (A4L) is the Welsh Assembly Governments answer. (No Jamie I’m afraid!)
It is an exciting time for young people in Wrexham. A4L means that there will be standards that all schools and canteens have to meet over the next few years and there will be lots of people working together to help make your lunch a healthy and positive experience!
What does this mean for you?
A4L have been asking young people from Wrexham what they wanted to see at lunch and break times to make their eating experience more enjoyable. In fact you could have been one of the lucky ones to be asked. Questions were asked to lots of young people about what they did enjoy about lunchtime and what they felt needed improving and how we could do that.
What you said about lunchtimes?
You said;
- You did not like the environment of your school canteens and it did not make you want to eat there.
- There was more seating needed
- Needed better promotion of what was on offer.
- You liked being with friends
Taking on board what you said and the ideas that you had, there are lots of exciting changes going on.
- One school is getting a new canteen
- Another school is developing an outside eating area
- More seating being added to some canteens
- Marketing campaigns to promote improvements and changes to the menus.
- More information about healthy choices and balanced diets in school.
A4L will start in all secondary schools from this September and this is when you will see the changes!
If you want more information please email the A4L team or phone 01978 842275.
If you have any concerns or tell us how great the changes are you can also tell your school council!
