This webpage provides key information for residents, parents and carers as the School Streets scheme is introduced. The scheme will help improve safety and promote active travel during school drop-off and pick-up times.
What is a School Street?
A School Street is a road outside a school that is temporarily closed to most vehicles at school drop-off and pick-up times during term time.
This helps to:
- Improve safety by reducing danger
- Improve air quality
- Encourage active travel
- Reduce congestion and inconsiderate parking
Only certain vehicles are allowed access during the restricted times (see exemptions below).
Who can still access the School Street zone?
Exempt vehicles include:
- Residents with valid School Street permits
- Blue Badge holders
- School buses and school transport
- Public transport and taxis serving the restricted area
- Emergency services and healthcare workers
- Utilities and tradespeople working in the area
- Postal and delivery services
Depending on the school, there may be an allowance for school staff to travel through the restriction to access the site.
Residents will receive information on how to apply for a School Streets Pass. These must be clearly displayed in any vehicle accessing the zone during restrictions.
When will restrictions apply?
School Streets operate:
- Monday to Friday during school term time only
- At school drop-off and pick-up times
- Times will be shown on road signs at the entrance to the School Street zone
There are no restrictions during weekends or school holidays.
