This 4 mile route starts near the Duke of Wellington Public House (grid reference SJ 272 428) and links the new World Heritage Site at Pontcysyllte aqueduct with the surrounding countryside. Walkers who wish to opt for a shorter walk can try out the 1.5 mile route which includes nine new easy-to-use kissing gates.

  • It should be noted that this route may be muddy in places and suitable footwear is recommended. There are also stiles, steep slopes and busy roads to negotiate.
  • The route is not suitable for wheelchairs, buggies or small children

Nearby houses are largely made up of nineteenth and twentieth-century cottages for workers in the area’s traditional industries of limestone quarrying and brick-making. Although these industries have now disappeared the area has a rich industrial archaeology.

The nearby Trevor Basin is at the north end of the Pontcysyllte aqueduct. Until 1965 the village had a railway station on the Ruabon to the Barmouth line.

The walk takes you through the village, across open farmland, crossing babbling rivers and streams, along through quiet wooded valleys, passing remnants of the area’s varied and diverse history.
