‘Prevent’ is a national safeguarding programme that supports people who are at risk of becoming involved with terrorism through radicalisation.

Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on certain bodies (including local councils), in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.

The aim of the Prevent strategy is to reduce the threat to the UK from terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. Prevent is about safeguarding vulnerable individuals from being radicalised and drawn into terrorism, ensuring that they are given appropriate advice and support.

In the Wrexham area the Wrexham Community Safety Partnership is responsible for overseeing that the Prevent duty is being met.
