Naming ceremony

A naming ceremony is a way to welcome and introduce your child into the world, by announcing the name or making a commitment to the child.

You may choose a naming ceremony for:

  • Celebrating the birth of a baby and welcoming the new arrival into the family
  • Joining together brothers and sisters
  • Families coming together
  • Welcoming an adopted child

The ceremony will be held by a ceremonies officer, and can take place at an approved premises (including our register office).

The ceremony has non-legal status and cannot be used to change the child's name.

Renewal of vows

This ceremony is for couples who wish to celebrate their original vows to each other, their years together and to confirm their commitment to one another.

Couples often have the ceremony to celebrate a special anniversary, but renewing vows can be suitable for any couples at any stage of their marriage or civil partnership.

Sometimes, if a couple had their original ceremony abroad with only a few family and friends; they choose to have this ceremony to celebrate with a wider group of people.  

A renewal of vows ceremony can take place at our register office or at an approved premise.

The ceremony has non-legal status.
