George R.R. Martin was born in 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began writing when he was very young, selling monster stories to other neighbourhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. In high school, he became a comic book fan and collector and began to write fiction for comic fanzines.
In 1970, Martin received a B.Sc. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Illinois. As a conscientious objector, he did alternative service, 1972-1974, with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. Throughout the 1970s, whilst working at various jobs, he became a part-time writer, eventually becoming a full-time author in 1979.
In 1986 he became involved with Hollywood, producing and editing many well known programmes such as Beauty and the Beast and Twilight Zone.
Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America and of Writers' Guild of America, West. His epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire has recently been made into a TV adaptation called Game of Thrones, staring Sean Bean.
