Playday 2016

Wrexham Playday 2016 Wrexham will be celebrating the 10th National Play Day event held in Wrexham town centre, on Wednesday 3rd August from 12pm to 4pm on Queen’s Square and Llwyn Isaf (the Guildhall field). As it’s the 10th one we are asking for people to send us in pictures of their “high 10’s” (a high five but with both hands) for us to display at Playday. Playday is for people of all ages including babies and toddlers, older children, teenagers, parents, professionals and grandparents, all are invited to join in this free and playful event. Organisations involved in children’s play and playwork from across Wrexham will be coming together to provide a wide range of playful opportunities, including favourites like the giant sandpit, mass water fight, junk play and rope swings. The aim of this event is to highlight children’s right to play, encouraging people to recognise the value of playing to children, their families and their local communities. In doing this Wrexham’s playday event is part of the local authority’s continued commitment to try ensure all children across the county borough have enough time, space and permission to play. Approximately 3000 people visited our Playday event last year and we aim to make this year’s even bigger and better, but this can only happen if people come along and join in the fun. All we ask is that you bring along a playful mood and some clothes you don’t mind getting wet and messy. In the past families have brought along picnics and stayed all afternoon! To get a better idea of the sorts of things that happen on Playday, please visit: www.wrexham.gov.uk/play and click on the Playday link to view photographs from previous events.

Touched by Greatness: The Story of Welsh International Football

Timed to coincide with Wales’s first appearance at an international football finals since 1958, this exhibition chronicles the heroic endeavours of the Wales’s greatest footballers. The right of a Wales team to exist has often been questioned and its stars refused permission to play; however, the team has become one of the unifiers of Wales and its star players – John Charles, Ian Rush, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale, some of the most famous Welshmen in the world. The eventful story is told through the artefacts and archives of the Welsh Football Collection.

Fighting On All Fronts: The Royal Welch Fusiliers during the First World War

The Royal Welch Fusiliers saw action on the Western Front, Italy, Egypt and Palestine, Iraq, the Balkans and Gallipoli in a series of hard-fought contests on the road to eventual victory with the armistice in 1918. The Last One Standing: The Tale of Bersham Colliery

On December 18th 1986, the last tub of coal was wound to the surface at Bersham Colliery. With the closure of the last pit in the Denbighshire coalfield, a centuries-old tradition came to an end. This exhibition tells the story of coal mining through the history of one pit, that although often threatened with closure, outlasted many larger and more modern collieries. In association with the North Wales Miners Association Trust.

New Tae Kwon Do Centre opening in Wrexham

Students and staff at Ady Jones’ Tae Kwon Do Academy are thrilled to have a new dedicated training venue open in Wrexham. Based on Wrexham Industrial Estate, the Family Martial Arts Centre is the first of its kind to open in Wrexham, and boasts a fully matted training area of over 2,400 square feet, as well as a fully enclosed mezzanine viewing area and cafe, changing facilities and a gym area. Dedicated to providing the highest quality of coaching and instruction, Master Ady Jones has a 6th Degree Black Belt and is a multiple World, European and National Champion. Ady says: “We are opening a facility that is much needed in the area and will benefit the Wrexham community, there is nothing else comparable to it in the whole of North Wales and with Tae Kwon Do being the UK’s fastest growing Martial Art, our town and the surrounding area was in much need of a safe and positive environment for adults and children to learn this fantastic sport.” Classes are available 7 days per week, with a full timetable that caters for children aged 3 years and up through to adults. Family classes are also available, so you can spend some quality time with the kids whilst learning new skills and keeping fit at the same time. The new centre will be hosting an open weekend on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September between 10am & 4pm Ady says all are welcome to stop by for a visit and see the new facilities.
