Playday 2015

Wrexham Playday 2015 Wrexham will once again be celebrating National Play Day on Wednesday 5th August from 12pm to 4pm on Queen’s Square and Llwyn Isaf (the Guildhall field). People of all ages including babies and toddlers, older children and young people, parents, professionals and grandparents, are invited to join in this free and playful event. Organisations involved in children’s play and playwork from across Wrexham will be coming together to provide a wide range of playful opportunities, including favourites like the giant sandpit, mass waterfight, junk play and rope swings. The aim of the event is to highlight the importance of children’s play, the theme this year is to “play more”. Approximately 3000 people visited our Playday event last year and we aim to make this year’s even bigger and better, but this can only happen if people come along and join in the fun. All we ask is that you bring along a playful mood and some clothes you don’t mind getting wet and messy. In the past families have brought along picnics and stayed all afternoon! To get a better idea of the sorts of things that happen on Playday, please visit: www.wrexham.gov.uk/play and click on the Playday link to view photographs from previous events.

Belles on Bikes

A 'female only' leisurely bike ride to encourage women to be more confident on two wheels. We will be using the National Cycle Network in the area that runs along the Llangollen Canal whilst celebrating 20yrs of the network and promoting multi use of the canal towpaths. The ride is suitable for anyone. It is often attended by women who have never cycled or not for a long time, so we always go at a very leisurely pace and have regular stops. The ride is led by trained female volunteers from Sustrans. We need to know numbers attending purely to ensure a good ratio of ride leaders to cyclists, so please email/phone/text if you are coming and also if you have an questions. No question is too daft! You will need a bike and a drink. Gloves are also handy as well as waterproofs depending on the weather...it is also advisable to wear lots of padding around your bottom-area, but don't worry...no lycra required. Just wear what you feel comfortable in. You can bring some nibbles for lunch too or you can buy lunch on route. At the beginning of the ride, the ride leaders will go over the route and what to look out for, and then off we go. Along the canal is a traffic free route so is ideal to get back in the saddle with a friendly face or two around to support you. See you there

Take a twilight walk with Marie Curie in memory of your loved ones

Why not get together with friends and family for a 10k walk in August, in memory of your loved ones and to raise money for people living with a terminal illness. An all-Wales walk is on 30 August at Cardiff Castle, but if you can’t make that, there are two walks nearer your location - Tatton Park in Cheshire on 8 August and Speke Hall in Liverpool on 22 August.

The Walks to Remember start at 6.30pm, and afterwards everyone can enjoy an evening of live music and entertainment as the sun goes down, ending with fireworks at 10:00 pm. All funds raised will help Marie Curie provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones, whether that’s at home, or in a Marie Curie Hospice.

Phoenix Dance Theatre: Mixed Programme 2015

Mixed Programme 2015 features a double bill by one of the most influential figures in world dance, Christopher Bruce CBE including a brand new work, Shadows created by him especially for Phoenix Dance Theatre and a restaging of Bruce’s energetic study of life in the 1940’s, Shift. Having choreographed works for leading dance companies across the globe, this is the first time that Phoenix will perform any of this renowned choreographer’s work. The work also features two world premieres. Phoenix Artistic Director, Sharon Watson follows up her audience favourites Melt (2011) and Repetition of Change (2013) with TearFall, a new piece which is supported by the Wellcome Trust and builds on her exploration of science through dance using her simultaneously mesmerising and athletic choreography style. The fourth piece is Bloom by exciting new choreographer and one of the New Adventures Choreographer Award winners, Caroline Finn, whose work often presents darkly comic expressions of life and humanity using her playful, quirky and highly engaging choreographic style. PARSING IMPOSSIBILITIES: The Art of Sameness

The volunteer run gallery is open to the public weekly on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12pm until 4pm. International Mystery Artists Team Up For Wrexham Exhibition The exploits of Banksy and other worldwide street artists have thrust the concept of hidden identities, pseudonyms and secret exhibitions into the public domain, but this idea has been present in the art world for many years. For many artists keeping their identity concealed is a strong element of what they do, and allow the public to look at the work they produce without any preconceptions. The A5 Collective is one example of this shadowy practice, with many critics claiming that the group may not even exist! But Wrexham based THIS Project have teamed up with curator Robert Stephen to host a unique exhibition which will, for the first time ever, show examples of work from all seven of the artists in one show. The purpose of the exhibition is to throw the light into the darkest corners of the art world and to question the celebrity culture that goes hand-in-hand with being a famous artist. The A5 group are a group of artists based in the United Kingdom and America. The artists are (in alphabetical order): Deceased landscape artist Ben D Gedig (real name Robert Lloyd Jones), whose work was discovered and is now presented by his grandson Robert John Jones; New-York-based digital revolutionary Richard Head (real name!); International Street Artist ‘ONE’; Russian Print luminaries The Ozniak Brothers; Drago Zalaznik who looks at the art of identity; and they will be joined by artist and exhibition curator Rob Stephen himself. Some members of the group wish to remain anonymous because they believe that the art they produce is more important than the artist. This is a reaction to our contemporary fascination with celebrity and the pursuit of fame and fortune—a world in which individuals are increasingly famous just for being famous. A5 do not usually give interviews prior to their exhibitions, keeping quiet about precise details and often only utilising social media after the unveiling. Their manifesto talks about how over the past 20 years the increased use of computers has created a paradigm shift in the way art is perceived. A5 state that; “We are interested in unfamiliar ways of interacting with different audiences and sharing a conviction that constantly evolving mobile technologies and information dissemination systems necessitate a more connected and accessible art.” Their manifesto asserts that in this digital age, art needs to become truly immersive and interact more fully with a public outside of the typical gallery habitué—and especially those people who live far from the major cultural centres. Undegun believe that bringing the A5 group to Wrexham will provide stimulating and exciting challenges for the local art scene, especially in terms of the unconventional way the artists have approached this exhibition. Undegun has always been known for letting artists take a strong creative role in the curation of their own work with the support of the gallery’s team, but for them this will be taking the gallery experience to an entirely new level. “Working with a group of artists like the A5 group has meant we’ve had to keep many of the details of the exhibition shrouded in secrecy. We have worked with Robert Stephen, who has acted as a middle-man between ourselves and some of the artists, and we’ve only been able to speak to them through secure channels, in case the press or the authorities are taking an interest in their activities. The challenge has proved worthwhile though, and this really will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the work in its current form. We’re very excited to have the opportunity and we hope people will come along to the launch to experience the conundrum of the A5 group for themselves!” If you want to find out more about the members of A5 and their manifesto please feel free to visit the THIS Project website, www.thisproject.co.uk.

New Tae Kwon Do Centre opening in Wrexham

Students and staff at Ady Jones’ Tae Kwon Do Academy are thrilled to have a new dedicated training venue open in Wrexham. Based on Wrexham Industrial Estate, the Family Martial Arts Centre is the first of its kind to open in Wrexham, and boasts a fully matted training area of over 2,400 square feet, as well as a fully enclosed mezzanine viewing area and cafe, changing facilities and a gym area. Dedicated to providing the highest quality of coaching and instruction, Master Ady Jones has a 6th Degree Black Belt and is a multiple World, European and National Champion. Ady says: “We are opening a facility that is much needed in the area and will benefit the Wrexham community, there is nothing else comparable to it in the whole of North Wales and with Tae Kwon Do being the UK’s fastest growing Martial Art, our town and the surrounding area was in much need of a safe and positive environment for adults and children to learn this fantastic sport.” Classes are available 7 days per week, with a full timetable that caters for children aged 3 years and up through to adults. Family classes are also available, so you can spend some quality time with the kids whilst learning new skills and keeping fit at the same time. The new centre will be hosting an open weekend on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September between 10am & 4pm Ady says all are welcome to stop by for a visit and see the new facilities.
