Wrexham Civic Society

The next meeting of the Wrexham Area Civic Society programme of events will take place on Thursday 16th of February, 2012.

There will be a presentation entitled “HOLT CASTLE: ITS HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY”. This will be given by Mr. Steve Grenter, who is the Heritage Services Manager at Wrexham County Borough Council

Holt Castle was constructed between 1277 and 1311. It played a significant role in the English Civil War when it was garrisoned by loyalist troops to prevent help reaching parliamentarian forces from Wales. After a three year siege Holt became the last castle to be captured by the parliamentarian forces in 1646. Much of its stonework was in fact removed by Thomas Grosvenor when he built the first Eaton Hall near Chester.

Recent archaeological excavations have been carried out in the area. No doubt Mr. Grenter will be able to provide an insight into the long history of the castle.
