 Welcome to the Rail section of the Wrexham County Borough Council website, designed to explain the role that the Council plays in delivering train services. Underlined words in this section allow access to other pages and external websites.
The railway infrastructure (line and stations) is owned and operated by Network Rail (external link) on behalf of the Department for Transport (external link). The Wales rail franchise (also incorporating many English border counties) is managed by the Welsh Assembly Government (external link), the train services are currently provided by Arriva Trains Wales (external link). Wrexham and Shropshire (external link) have a licence to operate direct services from Wrexham to London Marylebone.
The stations within the County Borough are leased by Network Rail to Arriva Trains Wales who operate and maintain them.
Whilst Wrexham County Borough Council do not directly sponsor any of the train services it facilitates improvements at stations by utilisation of Transport Grant via Taith (external link), a regional transport consortium comprising the six local authorities of North Wales. Historical improvements include the development of the Bus/Rail Interchange and improved car park facilities at Ruabon Station.
Wrexham County Borough Council are active members of the Chester – Shrewsbury Line Liaison Committee, the Borderlands Steering Group and the Mersey Dee Alliance (external link), actively seeking improvements in rail services and infrastructure.
