Census 2021

Census statistics on gender identity

The Office for National Statistics has downgraded the 2021 Census statistics on gender identity from 'Accredited Official Statistics' to 'Official Statistics in Development'.

This is due to concerns that people may have found the question confusing and therefore gave a response that did not reflect their gender identity. They also note that this issue is more prevalent among individuals for whom English is not their first language.

More information is available in a report from the Office for Statistics Regulation (external link).
