Marriage

Check if you can get married (including age requirements)

To get married in Wales you must both be over the age of sixteen, not related to each other and not already married or in a civil partnership.

If either of you will be under the age of eighteen on the date of the ceremony, then you need parental or court consent. Please contact our register office to speak to the marriage registrar for advice in these circumstances.

The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022 is due to come into effect on Monday, February 27, 2023. It will mean that 16 to 17-year-olds will no longer be able to marry or enter a civil partnership under any circumstances, including with parental or court consent. It will not be possible for anyone under 18 to marry or enter a civil partnership after this date.

Same sex couples can convert a civil partnership into a marriage in England or Wales. If you are considering converting your civil partnership you can email ceremonies@wrexham.gov.uk to discuss this further.

Civil marriage

A civil marriage ceremony is a legally recognised, non-religious marriage ceremony.

Religious marriage

If you want to get married in the Church of England or Wales, or in any other church or religious building, you will need to have a religious marriage ceremony.

Civil partnership

Civil partnership allows (same sex and opposite sex) couples to have their relationship formally and legally recognised.

Couples united by a civil partnership will have a new legal status and the same rights as married couples (for pensions, death duties and tax).
