Registering a birth

All births in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days of the child being born.

You will need to visit our register office in person to register a birth, call 01978 298997 to make an appointment.

If you have hospital discharge notes please bring these with you (these notes contain your baby’s NHS number, which will mean the registrar will be able to give you a form to register your baby with your family doctor). Don't worry if you forget, your family doctor will be able to get the NHS number from a different source.

You can register a birth in Welsh or English (you will be asked your preference when you contact us).

Registering a death

A death should be registered within five days (however registration can be delayed for another nine days if the registrar receives written confirmation that the medical cause of death certificate has been signed by a doctor).

You will need to visit our register office in person to register a death, call 01978 298997 to make an appointment.
